There’s a lot more to it than this, but I’m trying to simplify marketing for myself so I stop stressing over everything there is to do and learn. One of my main goals right now is to improve my skills in digital marketing as a whole. Starting as a content writer, I have come a long way but still have a lot to learn about planning and then tracking results. Out of the pages and pages of notes from the last few years, here’s how I’d sum up marketing.
- What do you do that helps others and how do you do it?
- Who do you help?
- Define your Mission, Vision, Values.
a. Ensure all your communication (website, promotional campaigns, social, and internal) reflects these statements. They are your brand. - Map out your expected sales cycle.
a. Are there times in the year you expect to sell more/less?
b. Will you be offering any incentives throughout the year?
c. How far in advance do you want to give an extra push for certain products/services/offer?
d. When will you do your planning and content creation? (And who will do it?) - Define your goals.
- Choose the platforms where you will connect with your audience(s).
a. Be sure to set up a way to track your performance on these.
b. Always provide more value than promotion of your products/services. - Create your content, write your promotional materials, build your campaigns.
a. See 3a.
b. See 6a.
c. This work is constant. - Publish your content and execute your campaigns as planned.
- Regularly review your performance in relation to your goals and correct your course as needed.
- Celebrate your progress and refine your strategy.
