Our conversation hadn’t slowed a bit, but we had stopped getting our drinks refilled and it was nearly time to head home from our happy hour (nearly three hours) when one of the company owners commented about the success of the team. When I reminded him he never thought we’d have a marketing team, he said our CXO played a Jedi mind trick on him to build one.
So there you have it. If you want an outstanding marketing team and you’re a small business, get yourself a Jedi.
Every marketing tactic I wanted my employer to pursue has now happened or will be this year because they hired an amazing leader who saw the value in content, sharing our activity and knowledge, and events/webinars. This woman gets things DONE. She heard my requests (or saw the gap herself) for more support for social media, tracking, and collaboration with sales, and they hired a director who is instituting a strategy to integrate everything mentioned above.
Tangent: Please know that I have never desired to be middle management and, thus, never pursue such opportunities. I either want all the responsibility (and freedom of choice) as a solopreneur or minimal responsibility as a happy employee. This is why I stay low and continue to do great work.
This company has returned to nearly 100% after losing over 50% of billable income when everyone was cutting costs in March and April. Our team is amazing, but someone is doing that outreach to drive our growth – our Jedi.
I strongly encourage small business owners to find a Jedi in marketing.
